Gönül Aysel Gürel was born on February 7, 1929 in Denizli and passed away due to lung cancer at Gayrettepe Florence Nightingale Hospital in Istanbul on February 17, 2008. His father was judge Ali Rıza Bey and his mother was housewife Kâmile Kezban Hanım. Due to her father's appointment, she spent her primary and secondary school years in Trabzon, and high school in Istanbul, at Erenköy Girls' High School.
After graduating from Istanbul University Faculty of Letters with a degree in Art History, she married journalist Ahmet Vedat Akın, whom she met in a theater play. Gürel, known by the nickname "Crazy Aysel" in her circle, stated in an interview that she tried to swim from Trabzon to Sevastopol and faced the danger of drowning eight times in this attempt.
Gürel, who left her mark in the world of cinema as well as her identity as an educator, was the mother of Müjde Ar and Mehtap Ar; He also supported Ertem Eğilmez in some of his screenplay projects. Three months before his death, he appeared in front of the camera for the last time, appearing in a Pepsi commercial with Aysun Kayacı.
Aysel Gürel is considered one of the most prolific songwriters of Turkish pop music. In addition to works such as “Firuze”, “Değirmi”, “Sarışığım”, he also added lyrics to songs interpreted by Sezen Aksu, Nükhet Duru, Zerrin Özer, Nilüfer, Burcu Güneş and many other artists.
