Maurice Chevalier

Maurice Chevalier Auguste is one of the unforgettable names of French cinema and music. Born in Paris in 1888, Chevalier carved out a career that left his mark on stage and cinema throughout his life. The artist, who is always remembered with his stylish tuxedo and straw hat, won the hearts of music lovers with unforgettable songs such as "Mimi", "Valentine" and "Louise".

Chevalier, the son of a painter father and a Belgian mother, spent his childhood in Paris. In 1901, when she was 13 years old, she started her career as a singer in a cafe. He quickly attracted attention with his talented voice and stage performance. Chevalier, who started performing in Marseille at the suggestion of a theater artist, returned to Paris, gaining fame with his facial expressions and imitation skills.

In 1909, he appeared on stage with the famous French star Frèhel, but this relationship was short-lived due to Frèhel's addictions. Chevalier then started working at the Folies Bergère music hall, where she had a romantic relationship with the artist Mistinguett. Mistinguett was Chevalier's secret admirer and later got the King of Spain involved to ensure Chevalier's release from captivity.

Chevalier, who fought on the front lines in World War I, was injured by shrapnel in the first week and was held captive in Germany for two years. Thanks to Mistinguett's efforts, he was released and was captured by British and American soldiers at the Casino de Paris in 1917. During this period, Chevalier, who was interested in Jazz and Ragtime music, began to dream of going to the USA.

Although he made a project with Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford during the silent films era, it failed. Returning to Hollywood with sound films, Chevalier signed a contract with Paramount Pictures. He made his film debut in 1929 with the movie "Innocents of Paris" and was quickly nominated for an Academy Award. Chevalier, who achieved great success in musical films, rose to the top with hit songs.
