Mustafa Başaran was born in 1950 in Turhal district of Tokat. Unfortunately, later in his life he fell into a path that would lead him to become a hitman. In 1976, he was assigned to kill Veli Doğan, and this incident caused him to step into a dark adventure.
The murder of Osman Yancı, a former pavilion manager, triggered a series of events. Yancı's secretary, Mehmet Karatepe, wanted to take revenge by holding Doğan responsible. For this purpose, he made an agreement with three hitmen, including Mustafa Başaran, and took action to implement his plans.
The incident that took place in Beyoğlu on May 5, 1976 was the beginning of Başaran's dark past. Following Veli Doğan, Başaran shot and killed him from very close range. Then, Şaban Erkalay, who came to the scene and tried to intervene, was also targeted by Başaran's gun. This tragic incident quickly attracted the attention of the police and Başaran was caught at the scene.
The trial process turned into a difficult journey for Başaran. Istanbul High Criminal Court sentenced Başaran to death penalty in 1981. This decision, approved by the Supreme Court, was later approved by the Advisory Council and the National Security Council and turned into a death sentence. Mustafa Başaran was executed by hanging in Edirne in 1983.
Başaran's story is also linked to the September 12 Coup and the death penalty debate in Türkiye. The events of that period are remembered as a dark page in the history of our country.
