Ömer Güney (assassin)

Ömer Güney, who was born on April 16, 1982 in Şarkışla district of Sivas, passed away in Paris on December 18, 2016. Güney, who was recorded as the only suspect in the murders that took place in Paris in 2013 and in which important figures in the Kurdish movement lost their lives, etched his name in history with this incident.
One of the striking points in Güney's life story was his marriage in Germany in 2003 and the residence permit he obtained due to this marriage. Güney, who started to live in France after this marriage ended in 2011, came to the fore after the murder of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez at the Kurdistan Information Office on January 9, 2013.
Paris Public Prosecutor François Molins announced that Güney was directly involved in the incident and stated that he had various relations with Kurdish groups.
It was revealed that about a year before the murder, Güney applied to become a member of an association affiliated with the French Federation of Kurdish Associations (FEYKA). This situation has led to different claims being put forward; Murat Karayılan, one of the PKK executives, claimed that Güney had no connection with the PKK and that he was actually working on behalf of the Republic of Türkiye.
A lawsuit was filed against Güney, who was arrested on January 21, 2013, by the French prosecutor's office on the charge of "murder in connection with a terrorist organization".
Güney, who struggled with health problems during his imprisonment, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died due to a lung infection at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris on December 17, 2016. With his death, many questions remain about both the murder case and his life.
