How to register your nickname (nick)

When you enter the chat as a guest, the nickname you choose is not reserved for anyone. After you leave, somebody else can type the same name and come in; people who know you may think it is you. This is one of the oldest issues on IRC, and the solution is just as old: nick registration.

Once you register your nickname, the name is yours. When someone else tries to come in with it, the system warns them, and if they cannot enter the password in time they have to give the name up. On top of that, when you log in with a registered name your channel privileges, the groups you belong to and your settings are remembered.

What registration requires

Only a password. An e-mail address is optional, but we strongly recommend it: if you forget your password, that is the only way to get your name back. If you don't give an e-mail address, there is nothing to be done once you forget it.

After registration

You have to identify yourself every time you log in. In the web chat this happens automatically; if you use another program, you enter your password after connecting.

1. Join the chat and type your name Enter the chat with the nickname you want to register. Registration is done for the name you are using at that moment — you cannot register a different name.
2. Make sure the name is free If you didn't get a warning when you came in, the name is free. If you got a "this nick is registered" warning, the name belongs to someone else; you need to choose another one. 💡 Spellings close to names already in use cause confusion too; choose a name that is entirely your own.
3. Type the registration command Type this on the chat line: /ns REGISTER yourpassword youremail — for example: /ns REGISTER Kg7*mavi [email protected]. If you don't want to give an e-mail address, typing just the password is enough. 💡 Since you are typing your password into the chat window, be careful not to send it to the channel by mistake; the command has to start with a /.
4. Wait for the confirmation message NickServ sends you a message telling you that the registration went through. If you didn't see that message, the registration did not happen; check the command and try again.
5. Verify it if you gave an e-mail address Click the verification link that arrives at your address. Registrations that are not verified expire after a while.
6. Log in again and identify yourself When you quit and come back, you will be asked for your password. If you signed in as a member in the web chat, this step takes care of itself. 💡 If you are connecting from another program: /ns IDENTIFY yourpassword
7. If you want to change your password You can change it with the /ns SETPASS oldpassword newpassword command. To add your e-mail address later: /ns SET email [email protected]
