How to take a screenshot

Taking a screenshot is the fastest way to explain a problem. Showing the error instead of saying "it gives an error like this" usually cuts the conversation in half.

Every system has its own shortcut, and they are all different from one another. The way to do it on all four systems is written out separately below; just find the step that applies to you and follow it.

The whole screen or a selection

In most cases the whole screen is unnecessary. Capturing only the relevant part makes things easier for the other person and keeps you from sharing something private by accident — don't forget that your open tabs, your notifications and your file names end up in the image too.

Before you share

If the image contains an e-mail address, a phone number, an address or account details, scribble over them. Most phones and computers offer a drawing tool right after the screenshot is taken.

1. The whole screen on Windows The PrtScn key copies the screen to the clipboard. Windows + PrtScn saves it straight to the Pictures folder.
2. A selection on Windows Press Windows + Shift + S; the screen dims and you select the area you want with the mouse. The selection is copied to the clipboard, and you can click the notification in the bottom right to edit it. 💡 This is the most useful method; you capture only the part you need.
3. On a Mac Command + Shift + 3 for the whole screen, Command + Shift + 4 to capture a selection. For a specific window, press Command + Shift + 4 and then the space bar.
4. On Android Usually you press the Power + Volume Down buttons at the same time. On some models swiping down the screen with three fingers works as well.
5. On an iPhone On models with Face ID, the Side button + Volume Up. On models with a Home button, Home + Side button.
6. Capturing a long page On phones, if the small preview that appears after the screenshot offers a "Scrolling" or "Extended" option, you can capture the whole page in a single image.
7. Scribble out private details Before sharing, open the image and paint over your personal details. Covering them with a solid color is safer than blurring them.
