How to join a chat room

The hardest part is writing that first message. We have it covered in six steps — you don't even need an account.

How to join a chat room

Joining a chat room for the first time is far simpler than it looks from the outside. The hard part isn't the technology: it's landing in the middle of a conversation scrolling up your screen and freezing at "what do I write now". This guide was written to make exactly that moment easier.

To join the chat on Yudum.NET you don't have to download a program, install anything or fill in a long registration form. The chat you enter from your browser works without asking for an account; you only choose a nickname for yourself. For those who do want to sign up, the difference is this: your nickname is reserved for you, nobody else can use it, and you join the groups you belong to automatically. But none of it is required just to give the chat a try.

Three things to know before you join the chat

The room you choose sets the pace of the conversation. In crowded rooms the messages flow fast and it is easy to meet people, but it can be confusing at first. In rooms with fewer people the conversation moves slowly and it is comfortable to speak up.

Everyone wrote a first message one day. You don't need to give a long introduction the moment you walk into a room; a short hello is enough. Nobody expects a polished entrance from a newcomer.

Asking a question is the shortest way into a conversation. A simple question about the topic being discussed almost always gets an answer. People enjoy explaining something they know.

If you get stuck

If nobody replies to your message, don't take it personally — most of the time another subject is running at that moment. Wait a few minutes and try again once the flow changes. If you come across someone who bothers you, you can block them from the right-click menu or report them to the room's moderator; every room has people on duty for this.

The six steps below walk you through everything from joining the chat to striking up your first conversation, in order.

🧰 What you need

  • A Yudum.NET account (not required, you can come in as a guest too)
  • An internet connection

Steps

  1. Join the chat Press the “Join the Chat” button in the top menu. If you don't have an account you can come in as a guest; all you have to do is type a nickname. 💡 If you want to change your nickname later, you can use the /nick command.
  2. Choose a room Choose a room that matches your interests from the list on the left. Conversation flows fast in crowded rooms; if you want a calm start, a room with fewer people is more comfortable.
  3. Say hello A short hello is enough the moment you walk into the room. You don't need to make a long entrance; the conversation is already flowing and you join in naturally.
  4. Watch the conversation for a while Follow the flow for a few minutes. Once you understand what is being talked about in the room, speaking up becomes much easier. 💡 If more than one topic is running at the same time, write the person's name to show who you are replying to.
  5. Join the conversation Add a short comment on the topic being discussed or ask a question. Asking a question is the easiest way into a conversation; people like to answer.
  6. Mind the chat rules Be respectful to the person across from you, don't write in capital letters (it counts as shouting) and don't post ads. These three things apply in every room.
