Fethullah Gülen was born on April 27, 1941 in the village of Korucuk in Pasinler district of Erzurum. His birth name is Fetullah, his father is mosque imam Ramiz Gülen and his mother is housewife Refia Gülen. The second child of eight children, he grew up with three brothers and two sisters. He started primary school in 1946, but had to interrupt his education when his father was assigned to Alvar village in 1949; Later, he received his primary school diploma with an exam outside Erzurum.
Gülen, who laid the foundations of a movement operating in the field of religion and education in the 1970s, traveled to the United States on March 21, 1999, under the pretext of health problems, and lived there in the town of Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania. During the February 28 period, Ankara Police Department prepared a report on the organization of Gülen and the people around him; In this report, it was claimed that Gülen was the leader of an organization and that his members infiltrated Turkish police units.
Three days after receiving the report, the General Directorate of Security made an assessment of Gülen's departure to the USA.
There are different opinions about Gülen's aims. While some argue that he wants to spread an interpretation of Islam that supports science, education and interfaith dialogue, others argue that his movement aims to transform Turkey into a theocratic structure by penetrating state institutions. As of October 28, 2015, he was included in the red category on the "most wanted terrorists" list of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and was accused of being the leader of FETO/PDY.
On July 15, 2016, the allegation that he attempted a coup by giving instructions to some people within the Turkish Armed Forces was brought to the agenda; Then, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan requested the surrender of Gülen from the US authorities. The Turkish Ministry of Justice has made official requests for Gülen's extradition seven times and is trying him for many crimes such as interference with the constitutional order, establishing an armed terrorist organization, espionage, assassination, fraud, forgery, stealing exam questions, illegal wiretapping, money laundering and violation of privacy.
Gülen, who was tried as the number one defendant in 45 cases during this process, is also known for his more than 50 books, magazine articles and sermons.
