How to get a passport appointment in Türkiye

Getting a Turkish passport is not a single sitting. You book an appointment first, then prepare your documents and pay the fee, then attend the population office in person so your biometric data can be taken, and finally the printed passport is couriered to your address by PTT. If one link in that chain is missing - an out-of-date photo, an unpaid fee, no parental consent - the appointment is wasted.

This guide walks through which channel to book from, what has to be ready by appointment day, and what to watch for at delivery. Children and accompanying-parent cases are covered separately, because that is where most people get stuck.

One thing worth knowing up front: the Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs states that passports are not extended - a new passport is issued with every application. So when your old one expires, what you file is a fresh application, not a renewal.

1. Choose your booking channel There are five ways to book: the randevu.nvi.gov.tr website, the "Pasaport Başvuru Randevusu" service on e-Devlet, the NVİ Mobil app, a Nüfusmatik kiosk, or the Alo 199 call centre. If you go through e-Devlet, type "Pasaport Başvuru Randevusu" into the search box, open the service and authenticate. All channels draw on the same pool of slots, so a time that looks taken in one will be taken in the others too.
2. Create the appointment Enter your identity and contact details, then pick a province and district. The system lists the population offices in that district along with free dates and times. Choose one and confirm; the appointment details appear on screen and a notification is sent to your phone. Special (green) and service (grey) passport applications are only handled at provincial population offices, so your choice of slots is narrower for those.
3. Have a biometric photo taken The photo must meet the ICAO standard: 50x60 mm, colour, full face from the front, taken within the last 6 months, no glasses. Tell the photographer it is a biometric photo for a passport and they will use the right dimensions. Do not turn up with an old ID photo - it will be refused at the counter.
4. Gather your documents Put your ID card, your previous passport if you have one, and the photo in a single folder. If you are a student claiming the fee exemption, add an up-to-date student certificate. If you are applying for a child, bring the court decision that shows the custody arrangement.
5. Pay the fee and the booklet charge You can pay at tax offices, PTT branches, partner banks, or online through the Revenue Administration at ivd.gib.gov.tr. The amount depends on the validity period you choose and is revised during the year, so we do not quote it here: you will see the current figure on the application fees page at randevu.nvi.gov.tr and on the e-Devlet service page. Make sure the payment is registered against your own Turkish ID number and keep the receipt.
6. Sort out the child and consent situation Because biometric data is captured, applications are made in person - the child has to be at the office too. For a minor, consent from whichever parent holds custody under the court decision is sufficient. If the legal guardians are present at the appointment, their consent is recorded there; if one cannot attend, bring a consent letter drawn up by a notary.
7. Attend the population office at your appointment time You apply in person, since fingerprints and your signature are taken on site. Arrive a little early and hand over your folder and the payment receipt. The officer will also ask for the delivery address and the name of anyone authorised to receive the passport on your behalf - answer both clearly.
8. Track the application You can follow the status through the "Pasaport Başvuru Durumu Sorgulama" service on e-Devlet, the application lookup screen at randevu.nvi.gov.tr, the NVİ Mobil app, or by calling Alo 199. Once the passport is handed to the courier, a barcode number arrives by SMS; use it to follow the delivery on PTT's tracking page.
9. Be ready for the PTT delivery The passport is sent by PTT courier to the address you gave, and handed to you or to the person named in your application. If it cannot be delivered, the item is held at the PTT branch for 10 days. If it is still not collected, the passport is returned to the office where you applied and you pick it up there.
