Creating a Group

A group is a members-only space with its own rules. It has its own chat channel, post feed, announcements and events.

How to create a group

There are three ways, and all lead to the same place. You need a registered nick.

From WebChat

1. Press the + next to the GROUPS heading in the left column (or My profile › My groups, or /groups).
2. On the groups page press ➕ Create a group. For the create window directly, use /newgroup.
3. Choose a name, description, joining type and privacy; accept the rules.
4. Send. The group is created and you join its channel.

From the site

Fill in the same details on the create a group page. You are taken to the group's page when it is created.

With a command

Joining and privacy

Joining type has two options: in an open group anyone can join directly; in an invite group people apply and an admin approves.

Privacy decides whether the group appears in lists. Hidden groups do not show in Discover; only people who know the name can find them.

Gathering members

A new group starts inactive and becomes active when it reaches 5 members. This stops one-person dead groups piling up.

• See pending: /msg SosyalServ PENDING #grup-name

In chat you can also manage it from Group settings by right-clicking the channel name. Applications wait 48 hours, then expire.

Announcements and events

When you post an announcement or create an event, it is announced in the channel and members who are not in the channel get a notification.

In chat you can also use 📢 Add announcement and 📅 Add event from the channel menu (visible to admins only).

Group settings

Admins can change the name, description, joining type, privacy and group picture — on the site from the group's Settings page, in chat from Group settings in the channel menu.

Only the founder can make members admins. The founder cannot leave the group.

Common questions

Where is the group's channel? A channel is opened automatically when the group is created. Group channels do not appear in the channel list; they are for members.

What happens when I join? Every time you connect you are automatically placed in the channels of your groups.

Who sees group posts? The group's name and description are public; posts are visible to members only.

Is there voice chat in groups? Yes, voice rooms are on by default in group channels. Details: Voice and video chat.

Can we share screens in a group? In group channels approved by the admins, yes: Screen and game sharing.
